24/05/99

Derry SFC round-up

THE Emmetts put up a terrific display against the Shamrocks but

Ballinderry just edged home 1-7 to 0-9 in a thrilling and sporting

contest.

Slaughtneil opened with points from Declan Cassidy and the accurate

Padraig Kelly. Gerard Cassidy opened Ballinderry’s account, getting

the first of five frees after eight minutes.

Three minutes later Niall McOscar’s free fell to Gerard Cassidy

and the prolific scorer crashed the ball to the net to give Ballinderry

1-1 to 0-2 lead.

The remainder of the half was keenly contested, Enda Muldoon,

Gerard Cassidy and Conleth Gilligan pointing for Ballinderry,

Kevin O’Neill, Padraig Kelly and Colin McEldowney for Slaughtneil.

That gave Ballinderry a 1-4 to 0-5 interval lead.

Gerard Cassidy and O’Neill exchanged points from frees on the

restart, Kelly and Cassidy again doing likewise to keep Ballinderry

ahead, 1-6 to 0-7, midway through the half.

Gerard Cassidy increased the lead to three points, Declan Cassidy

two minutes from time and Kelly from a free in added time, narrowed

the gap before the final whistle.

Meanwhile Magherafelt ended Ballinsacreen’s interest in this year’s

competition with a 1-12 to 2-6 victory.

Nigel Dillon, Gary Coleman and Aaron Higgins helped Rossas to

a 0-3 to 0-1 lead before an 11th minute goal by Martin Kidd turned

the game in favour of Ballinascreen who led 1-4 to 0-6 at the

break.

Twice the sides were level after the restart but, in the 10th

of the second period minute, Eunan Murray blasted home Ballinascreen’s

second goal after ‘keeper Kelly had made a great save from Eamonn

Burns.

Twelve minutes from time, with Ballinascreen a point ahead, Magherafelt

full-forward Ben Henry availed of a mix-up in the ‘Screen’s defence

to knock the ball to the net.

Rossas added two more points, with a late ‘Screen point by Eugene

Murray the last score of the game.
